8bit Shopify Theme Documentation

8bit is a retro OS-window Shopify theme built around a dotted desktop background and framed, window-style cards — a nostalgic nod to early operating system interfaces, reimagined for modern ecommerce. It’s built on Shopify’s official Skeleton architecture, giving you full Online Store 2.0 flexibility: drag-and-drop sections on every page, theme blocks, and native Shopify customization tools.

The theme includes a complete storefront toolkit: accelerated & dynamic checkout, a slide-out cart drawer with discounts and notes, predictive search with faceted filtering, gift cards with Apple Wallet support, customer accounts, related & complementary product recommendations, and multi-language support out of the box (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian).

Install Theme

  • Visit the Shopify Theme Store and find 8bit.
  • Click Try theme — this adds it to your store’s Theme Library for free, so you can explore and customize it before buying.
  • In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes.
  • Click Customize to preview and set it up, or Actions → Publish to make it live right away.
  • You’ll be prompted to complete the purchase from your Shopify admin once you’re ready to publish.

Note: per Shopify’s Terms of Service, themes are licensed per store — each store requires its own separate purchase.

Customize Your Theme

All customization happens directly in the Shopify theme editor — no code required. Go to Online Store → Themes → Customize, then open Theme settings in the left sidebar to access:

  • Logo — upload your logo, adjust its width, and set a favicon
  • Colors — window background, text, accent, border, and dot-pattern colors, so you can fully re-theme 8bit beyond the default palette
  • Typography — pick your heading and body fonts from Shopify’s font library, plus a body text scale control
  • Layout — control max page width and page margins
  • Header — toggle a sticky header
  • Cart — choose between a slide-out cart drawer or a dedicated cart page
  • Search — enable or disable predictive search
  • Social — add your X, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok links, used across the header and footer icons

Beyond theme settings, every page is built from sections you can add, remove, and reorder freely — including image banners, featured collections, featured products, rich text, FAQ, newsletter signup, custom Liquid blocks, and more.

FAQ

Do I need coding knowledge to use 8bit?
No — all customization is done through the visual theme editor.

Can I use 8bit on more than one store?
No, each store requires its own license/purchase, per Shopify’s theme terms.

What happens to my customizations after an update?
Theme settings and section content are preserved when following the update steps above. Manual code edits are not — back those up separately.
